Today is the 50th anniversary of International Literacy Day, a global holiday that exists to raise awareness for increased accessibility to education in developing countries. 758 million adults remain illiterate. However, global literacy rates have grown steadily over the past 50 years, especially in youth. There is room for improvement, but much to celebrate. Together, we are reading the past, and writing our future.

“I’m no stranger,” I said, and pointed to his book. “I’m someone who reads the same authors you do.” [Lemony Snicket]

Today is Hans Christian Anderson’s birthday (1805), and since 1967, Children’s Book Day. Let’s celebrate wonderful books and in particular, the ones we find in childhood and never let go. Today’s quipple features words from Lemony Snicket (Daniel Handler), who is one of today’s great children’s book authors.
